INTERVIEW ... BLODFEST

HAILZ, VALESKALD... HERE'S THE QUESTIONS: 1.Could you give us a short biography for those who haven't heard from you?

. Blodfest was formed back in 1992 as a projectband with the same line-up as now, we made some rehearsal demos but none of them was officially released. At that time the main band for Gru and I was Solhverv, and for Bestial Butcher it was Legion (now called Wolfslair), but Solhverv split up in -98 after releasing a MCD and a full-length cd. After that Gru and I started koncentrating on our Horror-ambient projekt called "Udforsk" and we both had some solo blackmetal projects at the same time. In 2004 we regained contact with Bestial Butcher, joined him in Wolfslair, and started Blodfest up again, the first Blodfest material was a few newly composed tracks and some of the solo-tracks we both had made. In February 2005 we recorded our 9 track "promo cd 2005", and were in contact with a German label that was going to release our material if we re-recorded it with a better production, so in October 2005 we re-recorded the songs + 4 new ones, this and entitled the cd "Krakes Blod". But the German label ripped us off and we had to release it ourselves. In April 2006 we recorded 9 new tracks for a demo which we entitled "Krakes Krigeres Kampgejst" The title is a bit difficult to translate, but it means something like "The Battle-spirit of Krakes warriors". This Demo got us in contact with the Canadian label None more Black records. Then we recorded the material for the full-length cd "I Kong Skjolds Navn" in December 2007, and it was released in the summer 2007. We are starting recording new material again now in the beginning of December for our next release.

2. It has been two 1/2 years since your previous release 'Krakes Blod'. What has BLODFEST been up to in the mean time? . We released a 9-track demo in April 2006, as mentioned above 3. ''I Kong Skjolds Navn'' is released, how are you feeling now, are you satisfied with how the album came out? Did it fulfill your expectations or did you expect more? . We are very satisfied with the result, but offcourse there are things we will do differently next time. The recording is made in our own studio, and at that time we had just bought new equipment, we know the equipment a lot better now so..... but we will not record in some fancy hightech studio, we have tried that, if the right atmosphere arent there, the recording wont get the right feeling. Blackmetal is ment to be dirty and most of all honest. Most of the new blackmetal productions i have heard for the last few years are much to polished and over-produced, when you use trigger on the drums, you might as well use a drumcomputer, to me a lot them sounds like deathmetal, but apparently the Blackmetal marked is bigger than deathmetal these days, so many just alter their image a bit and claim to play BM to sell some records. Your music wont become Blackmetal just because you put some corpsepaint in your face.

4. What does ''I Kong Skjolds Navn'' mean (on English)? Why did you choose this title? How does it relate to the music and lyrics? Is there a concept?

. The title "I Kong Skjolds Navn" means something like "In the Name of King Skjold" Nearly all of our lyrics and cd titles relate to ancient viking kings and heathen Gods. Kong Krake as we named 2 of our previer releases after, are a descendant of King Skjold. We Live in a town called Lejre, which was the capital of Denmark in the viking ages. Back then Denmark was ruled by a clan called "Skjoldungerne"(meaning"descendants of Skjold") The first King from this clan was Skjold, he was a son of Odin who was send here to rule and unite the country. We feel that it is like a calling for us, to honour these kings and ancient gods by telling the stories about them, how brave and victorious they were.

5. How was the lyrics and music writing process? . We live right in the middle of where it all happened back then. You can still feel the atmosphere there, that inspires us. 6. Compared to ''Krakes Blod'' (self- realized) I would say your music has got a new kind of maturity. The songs seem more balanced. Would you agree? Did the writing process differ much this time around? . Yes we feel that too, we had to find our own personal style. We think the tracks we are going to record next month are just as Blodfest is ment to be, they are much more atmospheric and wellcomposed than the former releases. And even a bit more aggressive. 7. Are you satisfied by the reviews of ''I Kong Skjolds Navn''?

. We havent read more than a few reviews of the cd, but the ones we have read was ok. You must remember that music is art, and whehter or not you like a piece of art is a matter of taste.

8. You're formed in 1992. After all these years of living , making music etc what would you say has been the driving force behind you and BLODFEST, besides FALLEN ANGEL,SOLHVERV, WOLFLAIR...?

. The driving force behind our music has always been a kind of "calling" as I mentioned above, we feel that we must tell these stories. The lyrics in Solhverv were about the exact same subjects. In Wolfslair it is a bit different since it is Void Saxtorph who both write the lyrics and makes most of the music. His lyrics are mostly about how christians has destroyed the culture of our forefathers.

9. With a new album under your belt, I take it you're going to tour in support of the new record. When will you be on tour and with whom? . We dont play live with Blodfest, we dont think the music of Blodfest is live-orientated, but we play live with Wolfslair. When we release the next Wolfslair cd, we might arrange a tour, with whom is hard to say, but there are a few other danish bands we share a lot of oppinions with. 10. Your official label is ''None More Black Records''. Are you satisfied with their work? . Yes, we are very satisfied with them, they are honest and does a good job promoting the cd. 11. Can you recommend me some bands from Danmark who play similar music like BLODFEST?

. I cant think of any other bands who playes music similar to ours, but danish bands like Nidhug, Sadomator, Angantyr, Holmgang, Ligfaerd and Vardlokkur are really great bands, who deserves some more attention. They are all very serious about what they make.

12. You usually categorized as Heathen/ Pagan old school BM? What do you think about this genre yourselves?

. We have allways enjoyed oldschool blackmetal, so its ok for us if we are catagorized as being that. We play it as we think it is ment to be.

13. What has the future holding in store for BLODFEST? What are things that you want to accomplish in the future? . As mentioned, we are recording next month. Hopefully None more black records will release this one too. And besides that just to keep on making new songs. OK, thanx for the interview... see you!!! Stay old school and Pagan!!!!
